Wanted: Up and coming young photographers. (Or up and coming older ones.)
Two great opportunities for someone to start a career in photography
Exciting news. We’ve secured a superb extra prize which could encourage someone to start a career (or second career) in photography. Advertising agency AML who were based on Clerkenwell’s St John Street for many years, now down the road in Shoreditch, are offering a real-life £1000 paid commission to someone who shows promise. Perhaps a youngster who can’t afford, or doesn’t fancy, the art school route. Or maybe someone who fancies taking a whole new direction.
So if you know of anyone keen to work on a live brief (and get paid for it ) do encourage them to send some shots in before the end of July.
And don’t forget Metro Imaging are offering a place on their highly respected, industry recognised 12 month mentoring programme as part of their long-standing commitment to encouraging fresh talent into photography. A truly superb opportunity to learn alongside other emerging talent.
Two great Magnum Books to be won
Magnum Photos is a globally recognised photography collective, with its London office on Gee Street, here in Clerkenwell. They’ve kindly supplied a couple of lovely extra prizes. These will be awarded by Marine Mérindol, Partnerships Director at Magnum Photos.
A copy of Magnum 2020 will be awarded to the best photojournalist shot. Featuring the work of over 60 photographers, Magnum 2020 brings together a turbulent year of world events through the eyes of this world famous photographers collective.
A copy of Magnum Dogs will be awarded for the best photo of, er, a dog. (Other pets also considered!). Photos including the owners more than welcome too.
A short sentence should accompany the shots, along with the age category and location, as per a normal entry. The Magnum Prizes are open to all, not just Newsletter subscribers, and will be announced at the awards evening.
If you’re not familiar with Magnum, see one of our earlier blogs: How three Magnum photographers saw Clerkenwell
Awards event and exhibition
We’re really thrilled to now have SoapBox on board. Based on the corner of Old Street and Central Street, SoapBox Islington is one of the most exciting and innovative youth centres in the UK. It caters for young people aged 13 upwards, who live, study or work in Islington. The launch of the exhibition will possibly tie in with the Whitecross Street Party on 11th / 12th September. (More details to follow in a later newsletter and on social media).
Know any local characters?
This is really just an excuse to show this shot, which I love. It’s Al from Scotti’s Snack Bar on Clerkenwell Green, taken by his mate Jon Cox, as part of a series ‘ A Snowy Day in Clerkenwell’.
We love Jon’s entry for two reasons:
1. It has a shot of a local as the main image (we’d love more of these!)
2. It’s part of a series (we’d love more of these too!)
If you want to see the rest of Jon’s series, and a selection of entries, check out our gallery section
